April 6th, 2019 ― Doha: A medical delegation of Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) and Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) has concluded its mission in Palestine, which involved visits to the Jenin Hospital in West Bank and the Al-Shifaa Medical Complex in Gaza.

The delegation featured Dr. Mohammed Al-Hatou, senior consultant and head of neuromuscular department, Dr. Wasfy Jameel Hamad, senior consultant and head of ICU and pulmonology department, and Dr. Maher Saqqur, senior consultant and head of department of neurology.

Dr. Hamad said the visit focused on providing health care services for the patients; assessing the capacity of medical staff and nurses in the departments of pulmonology, ICU, and neurology; and identifying the technical needs of medical equipment and consumables amid blockade.

“We have seen a dire need for more and better qualified physicians, nurses, and assistants,” he added. “As we come back to Doha, we will recommend a twinning agreement between Qatari and Palestinian health care providers. I call upon everyone related to the health sector to visit Palestine and serve our brothers there”.

While assessing information of Palestinian hospitals, Dr. Al-Hatou pointed out, the delegation discovered a need for specialist medical centers, such as a cerebrovascular accident center.

Also, there was found a deficit in technical specialists, particularly magnetic resonance neurography (MRI) and respiratory technicians, as they are key to medical monitoring and assessment.

“We will arrange for a project to provide high-tech electroencephalographers (EEG) and training for technicians,” he promised.

According to Dr. Saqqur, the delegation delivered lectures in Jenin and Gaza on a wide range of critical medical topics. He valued the contributions by QRCS and partners, which would help improve the quality of medical services provided for Palestinian patients.

About Qatar Red Crescent (QRCS)

Established in 1978, Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) is a humanitarian volunteering organization that aims to assist and empower vulnerable individuals and communities without partiality or discrimination.

QRCS is a member of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, which consists of the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), and 191 National Societies. QRCS is also a member of several GCC, Arab, and Islamic organizations, such as the Islamic Committee of International Crescent and the Arab Red Crescent and Red Cross Organization (ARCO). In this legally recognized capacity, QRCS has access to disaster and conflict zones, thus serving as an auxiliary to the State of Qatar in its humanitarian efforts — a role that distinguishes it from other local charities and NGOs.

QRCS operates both locally and internationally and has ongoing international relief and development projects in a number of countries throughout the Middle East, Asia, Africa, and Europe. QRCS's humanitarian actions include providing support in disaster preparedness, disaster response, risk reduction, and disaster recovery. To mitigate the impact of disasters and improve the livelihoods of affected populations, QRCS provides medical services, healthcare, and social development to local communities. It is also active at the humanitarian advocacy front. With the help of a vast network of trained, committed staff and volunteers, QRCS aspires to improve the lives of vulnerable people by mobilizing the power of humanity.

QRCS works under the umbrella of the seven international humanitarian principles: Humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity, and universality.
